Knowing when to let go.....

The goal of any teacher is to help students grow. Academically, it’s to stretch their minds and expand their way of thinking and learning. In yoga, it’s stretching their bodies, and bringing into alignment mind, body and the spirit. Teaching yoga to seniors is one of the most rewarding positions I have ever held. I get to see how someone who can barely bend over and touch their toes due to stiffness, and other conditions that limit mobility and flexibility, are doing downward dog and Sun Salutations after a few months of yoga. But because not all of my students move at the same pace, some advancing at a much faster pace than others, I have to allow those students to be more challenged. I feel like a mother releasing her child to go off to school after being at home the first five years. But at the same time, I feel proud and that I have given my student the foundation to continue with their practice that will help them to live healthier and more vibrant lives.
Valorie Gordon is one of those students.
"When I began taking yoga under the instruction on Connie Sloane, I was healing from a severe muscle injury in my back. I was also dealing with a lot of emotional, mental and psychological stress and pain due to difficult family dynamics regarding care giving responsibilities of my elderly mother who had become ill. A referral to a physical therapist was given to help with the muscle injury in my back. One day during a therapy session, I heard the therapist say....."Sometimes pain doesn't leave until we let go"... After careful thought of his statement, I immediately sought a yoga class that would possibly help me do just that...let go! Shortly afterwards, I met Yoga Instructor, Connie Sloane, and today after taking a few months of her classes and learning proper stretching and breathing techniques, I finally feel free of pain. Connie has a very soothing and calming voice that helps her students to tune into themselves. I gradually began to feel restored emotionally and physically. The surprising result was a renewed confidence and freedom within. I can stretch a lot further than before and I feel fabulous. Connie's yoga classes have made a huge difference in my well-being."
